Sometimes I really, really hate my life choices. I keep repeating to myself, far but never apart, far but never apart…

“I feel like I’m going to get my parents arrested!”
Last time I was in Brooklyn visiting my friends we spent hours remembering the absurdities of our childhoods back in Brazil. By absurdities I mean the coolest and most clueless adventures ever! From giving baby chicks baths, drinking paint thinner, to cooling off the summer heat using rubbing alcohol and a fan…it’s surprising we survived.
I still think we came out just right!

Freestyle in Rio
If my imagination could expand just a little bit more, then this video is everything I would expect from a Brazilian freestyle futebol video. Beautiful Brazilian scenery and skills filled with high swank to spare. There are incomprehensible skills that simply give off an abstract aura of athleticism. Not to mention that any freestyle video that takes place on the Escadaria Selarón is just fine with me…

‘Senna’: The Fast-Paced Life Of A Champion Racer
Reviewer Ian Buckwalter says this documentary covering the short life of the legendary Ayrton Senna avoids the pitfalls of a by-the-numbers sports documentary to tell a story as “neatly constructed as any fictional film.”
I still remember waking up that Sunday and asking my mother how was the race. Would we listen to his victory theme after the checkered flag? Could we go on another week bragging about how good he was and how good he made us feel by winning the way he always did? She said he had an accident and things were looking bad. I remember the feeling in my gut, like a punch. Good ole’ cliche, yet so precise in describing that day.
This type of love for a race-car driver might not make much sense, I guess it’s a “regional” thing, you have to be Brazilian to know… That song, that damned song.
To think about Senna’s legacy and victories still brings a smile to my face, shortly followed by a sense of loss that only the word saudade could describe.
Saudade, another word you would have to speak Portuguese to know, trust me, sometimes not knowing is best.
When people joke [mostly they just state] that brazilians are all about “the ass” [bunda!] I’m the first one to jump in, trying to defend us by bringing up some examples of other relevant things about being brazilian, like also hum… futebol, samba, coffee, caipirinhas, churrasco, and Carnaval - JOKING!
Anyways, I just couldn’t help myself when I saw this picture of the brazilian beach volleyball player Maria Clara, look at dat ass!!!

Saudade and cafuné, two classics of the portuguese language, although cafuné is a noun and not a verb.
Strangely enough I am dying of saudade for a cafuné!

Brazil Outpaces All Other Countries in Reducing Global Warming Emissions, According to New Rainforest Data | Union of Concerned Scientists
Brazil announced today that it reduced tropical rainforest destruction to another record low level. The country’s National Institute for Space Research found that the loss of Amazonian forest reached a record low of 2,490 square miles (6,450 square kilometers) between August 2009 and July 2010, 67 percent lower than the average deforestation rate between 1996 and 2005.
Below is a statement by Doug Boucher, director of climate research and analysis at the Union of Concerned Scientists.
“Brazil has done more than any other country over the past five years to cut global warming emissions by dramatically reducing its deforestation. Destroying tropical forests is responsible for about 15 percent of global warming pollution, and Brazil had been the biggest source of deforestation pollution. Its reduction is a stunning turnaround.
“Let’s put this achievement in perspective. This year, Brazil has emitted about 850 million tons less global warming pollution per year than what it emitted between 1996 and 2005. That is just 15 percent less than the amount the Obama administration promised to cut between 2005 and 2020. And it is equal to the amount the European Union has pledged to cut by 2020. In other words, a developing country already has nearly achieved what the world’s wealthiest countries have only promised to do.
“Brazil had previously committed to cutting deforestation by 80 percent by 2020, and recently shortened that time frame to 2016. But by enforcing its environmental laws, protecting indigenous peoples’ land, and reforming agriculture and ranching practices, it has already made a 67 percent reduction, putting it well on the way to reaching even its accelerated goal.
“Some of the credit needs to go to Norway, which agreed to give Brazil as much as $1 billion over five years if it reduced deforestation. That funding has compensated farmers, ranchers and other Brazilians whose livelihoods depend on clearing trees. Norway’s contribution amounted to about $100 a year for each of its citizens. By contrast, the amount of aid the United States has pledged to protect tropical forests amounts to only about $1 a year for each American.
“Brazil’s accomplishment is a ray of hope in an otherwise gloomy picture due to the failure of wealthy countries to seriously address global warming. It’s past time for the rest of the world to step up and follow Brazil’s lead.”
